JOB DESCRIPTION

Start Date: Start of September 2019

End Date: End of November, 2019

General Responsibilities (all necessary training will be provided, free of charge)

  • Become familiar with relevant OPIRG policies and procedures relating to the workplace and programming
  • Work with Volunteer Coordinator and OPIRG volunteers to plan, promote, deliver and evaluate events and workshops
  • Design posters, leaflets, pamphlets, and electronic newsletters
  • Assist in the preparation and staffing of information displays
  • Office reception duties (answer phones, assist visitors, etc.)
  • Provide support for OPIRG Action Groups and OPIRG’s Campus and Community Partners in consultation with staff
  • Produce and edit content for RadiOPIRG on CFRU 93.3FM
  • Data entry

Required Qualifications

  • A demonstrated interest in social and environmental justice
  • A desire to continue activist and organizing work after OPIRG
  • Ability to work flexible hours (including evenings and weekends)
  • Basic understanding of power, privilege and anti-oppression; and ability to put that understanding to use in the OPIRG environment
  • Willingness to attend multiple workshops and trainings in order to build organizing skills and capacity

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to work without close supervision and engage in problem-solving
  • Enthusiastic and approachable
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English

Scheduling Details:

  • 1-10 hours per week
  • Could be 1 or 2 semester commitment.
  • Availability during OPIRG Guelph office hours (Fall hours currently Monday thru Thursday 10:30am to 4:30pm).

This position is part of the campus Work Study program. To apply, you must be approved for Work Study through Student Financial Services.

These jobs are 10 hours per week for 10 weeks and the pay is $16.40 per hour.

Anticipated Student Learning: 

The student in this position will further develop their written communication skills as well as their creativity and innovation skills by creating promotional material for OPIRG Guelph regarding our events and creating and editing content for our weekly radio show on CFRU RadiOPIRG.
